Well...I should probably start off by saying that NO photographer is perfect. But, when it comes to preserving life's most precious moments, few investments are as rewarding as hiring a professional photographer, and you can find one that's perfect for YOU! Whether it's a wedding, family portraits, or a special event, the right photographer for you can turn fleeting moments into timeless memories. It can be overwhelming finding the perfect fit though, so to help you make an informed decision, here are five essential tips to consider when choosing a photographer.

What is the photography style you want?
One of the first and most critical considerations when choosing a photographer is their photography style. Different photographers have distinct styles, ranging from traditional and classic to modern and documentary. Before you begin your search, take some time to explore different styles and determine which one resonates with your vision. Do you prefer candid, spontaneous shots, or do you lean towards more posed and traditional photography? Do you like bright and true to color photos, film look-alikes, or a darker, moody style? Once you've identified your preferred style, look for photographers whose portfolios align with your aesthetic.
How much support do you need?
Photographers offer varying levels of support beyond just taking pictures. Especially when it comes to elopements and weddings, some photographers, like myself, offer comprehensive packages that include pre-shoot consultations, assistance with location selection, and outfit guides. Others may provide a more hands-off approach, focusing solely on capturing moments as they unfold on that day. Consider how much guidance and support you require. If you're planning a complex event or want creative input, a photographer who offers more comprehensive services may be the right choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a minimalist approach, someone else might be a better fit.
How far in advance do you want to book?
Photographers often have busy schedules, especially during peak wedding and event seasons. To secure your preferred photographer, it's crucial to plan ahead and book well in advance. Ideally, you should start your search and make a reservation at least 6-12 months before your event. This ensures that you have access to a wider pool of talented photographers and can avoid disappointment due to scheduling conflicts.
What is your budget?
Determining your budget is a crucial step in selecting a photographer. Photography services can greatly range in pricing, depending on factors like experience, reputation, and the services included. It's essential to establish a clear budget early in the process to avoid any unexpected expenses. Keep in mind that photography is an investment, and while it may be tempting to cut costs, high-quality photography can make a significant difference in the final results. Be prepared to allocate a reasonable portion of your overall event budget to photography.
Additional Tip: Don't Hesitate to Schedule a Phone Call with Potential Photographers
Taking the extra step of scheduling a phone call or even a video call with potential photographers can provide invaluable insights and foster a deeper connection. This is a good time to ask questions, discuss your vision, and even see if your personalities mesh. A phone call can help both you and the photographer feel more comfortable working together. It's a chance to address any concerns or hesitations you may have and ensure that the photographer is the right fit for your needs.
Having gone through the process myself, I understand that choosing the right photographer can be an overwhelming decision, especially when it comes to capturing your moments that matter most. As an East Tennessee wedding and lifestyle photographer, one of my greatest joys is connecting with new people and making them feel at ease about how I tell their story.
By considering your preferred photography style, the level of support you need, booking well in advance, setting a realistic budget, and doing your research, you can ensure that you select a photographer who will transform your special moments into lasting memories. Whether that is me, or someone else, I’m happy to assist in the process of finding the perfect photographer to preserve the stories of your life.
